The Lost Children of Mossflower

This cutscene marks a continuation of the "Viking" TP that happened some years ago.

Seasons have passed since invaders from the North brought a wave of destruction to Mossflower. The vermin hailed from the icy tundra, and left nothing behind but blood, ruin, and shattered lives... None suffered worse than Camp Willow in these attacks, and following the loss of so many lives and homes, a small number of beasts set out to locate and return as many of the captives taken as they could. Three warriors: the great badger Invar, the Taggerung, Lutea of the Saltmoon Tribe - a Northerner herself, and the Sun Priestess Juniper of the Southern clan Sol traveled to the furthest reaches of the map in search of the souls stolen by the North.

Their journey was long and dangerous, but not completely in vain. They raided slave caravans and vermin encampments, finding the occasional beast stolen from Mossflower by the very vermin they hunted. They freed some. They lost others. The bloodshed only continued... And still, they plunged North. They received assistance from the Saltmoon Tribe and the Sol clan, but ultimately, when they found the vermin stronghold – a castle the vermin had stolen and fortified – they were on their own.

As soon as they had seen the castle, they had known that it would be a matter of stealth. There was no way that two otters and a badger could take on a veritable fortress - especially one manned by beasts whose tactical and brutal prowess they had witnessed first hand; but upon closer inspection, they found luck to be on their side. In the warmth of summer, the Northerners did not have as much of an advantage, evening the playing ground some. And on top of this? Most of them were gone. Raiding, pillaging, bringing plunder back to fuel a greedy, proud, bloody lineage; of course, such hardy foes hardly needed an army to guard a fortified stronghold.

Perhaps it would have been better for them if they had one.

In the dead of night, the three snuck into the fortress by way of a sewage grate that bled excess snow and other wastes from within the walls. The Northern invaders fell, one by one, as the three searched the fortress for the captives, surprise on their side. They found them.

Twenty in total from Camp Willow and a dozen more, woodlanders and vermin alike, from elsewhere. Surviving otters outnumbered the rest, bred strong and hardy as Camp Willow has so proudly boasted, but they spoke of those that had perished already: their leader had taken a special interest in Ayita, a healer from the Camp. She had been given special positions within the clan because of this favoritism and her skill - their leader was attached to her, perhaps he even loved her, and the otters spoke of the bitter peace she found in flinging herself from the ramparts for the sake of taking something from him. In hurting him in the only way she was capable.

Others had been worked to death, or killed in tournaments, or sold. Some of those, Juniper, Invar, and Lutea had found - some they had not. They armed the freed slaves with the Northerner's own weapons and cut their way to freedom through the front gates: they now out-numbered those few vermin that had been left behind to keep the hold, though the Northern beasts were fierce and skilled rivals. It was not a lossless escape.

Thirteen otters and a handful more beasts were freed by the three warriors, and now they sail for home on a ship from Juniper's homeland, the same one that bore the warriors to the glacial, Northern shores. Mossflower may be a long way off, but for those ripped from the Northerner's clutches: freedom has never tasted sweeter.

        They're coming home.
